Making homemade ornaments as a kid was always so fun. I used to be so proud of the ornaments I made and would make sure they were front and center when I decorated the tree every year. I LOVE it when my kids bring home ornaments they made, but I’ll be honest, they don’t fit it in so well with my beautifully decorated tree that I have spent years curating the perfect combination of ornaments to make it so pretty and special. We do have 2 trees. The pretty one and then the fun one for all the mismatched ornaments.
Today, on DAY 4 of 12 Days of Christmas, I am sharing an idea for DIY Abstract Art Christmas Ornaments that can be the best of both worlds. A homemade ornament your littles can help you with, that you might actually want to put on that “pretty” tree.
My kids had a blast painting their pictures for these (though my 1 year old mostly wanted to just play in the paint) and Eden is so proud to show off her ornaments on the tree.
See below for step x step instructions (with pictures) and supply list.

Supplies List:
Card Stock or Construction Paper
Paint (color of your choice) – I used Gold, White & Black since it’s the colors of my tree
Decorative Tape – I used gold to mimic a gold frame. You can use washi tape, too.
Double Sided Tape
Ribbon – I used black
Super Glue
Scissors and/or paper cutter
Paint brush or sponge
Wood Pile Rectangles
Instructions:
STEP 1: Create your abstract art. My kids bring home crafts and pictures everyday of pictured that they painted, colored, construction papered, whatever. Some of them are actually kind of cool and look like abstract art. Give your kiddos some paint and let them go to town. I also gave them these sponges I had bought years ago at a craft store and they loved using those as well.
STEP 2: Cut paper into to rectangles to fit the size of your backings.
STEP 3: Use double sided tape to adhere the paper to the wood backing.
STEP 4: Use decorative tape to make a frame around each picture.
STEP 5: Cut string about 5-6 inches long. Glue the ends together.
STEP 6: Glue the string onto the back of the wood backing.
STEP 7: Hang on the tree.
