So, I know this post is a little late as it has been well over a year since I threw this “Unicorns & Rainbows” party…buuuttt…I was newly pregnant when I threw it and life has been a bit crazy since then. This party turned out so cute though and I did not want to pass up an opportunity to share the cuteness and great DIY ideas with you!

My eldest turned 5 in March of 2021. I knew this might be the last time I could throw her a full on party without a trampoline park or bowling alley involved. I obviously did let her pick the theme, though. As it wouldn’t have been my first choice I knew I could still make this VERY girly and sometimes obnoxiously colorful theme be chic and cool.
4 Categories of Planning ANY party:
- Decor – This is all about the theme! Theme determines decor. This includes tableware, balloons, backdrops, flowers, etc.
- Food – Arguably the most important part of ANY party! Deciding on a menu is determined by time of day and who’s invited. Are you serving snacks or dinner?
- Activities – You need some kind of activity at a party, especially kids birthday parties. Those kiddos need something to do! Baby and wedding showers are perfect for fun games, too.
- Favors – I never go anywhere empty handed and I also don’t like to send people home empty handed. Whether it’s leftovers sent home from a dinner party or a little happy at a shower or party, favors are a MUST!
The Decor:
I love making backdrops for the food table. I always buy these inexpensive plywood boards from Home Depot and paint them. I had a friend cut this one into an arch and painted a rainbow on it to serve as the inspiration for everything else. I like to bring in colors and theme motifs into all the food containers to tie everything together. I use white popcorn boxes and the white ice cream cups for almost every party I throw. You can add stickers or colors to them to fit in with any theme. I make custom stickers using my cricut to add to them most of the time. That way I can usually find the colors I need from their collection of vinyls and make the motifs just the way I want them to be. I plan on selling my templates on Etsy in the very near future, so stay tuned for that. I use the same stickers to create cupcake toppers or anything else that can be used to add details to the food table. I also like the match the food to the theme…more on that in a minute.

Like I explained above, I typically will make my own customs stickers to bring my theme into a party. This way, I can make it look exactly how I want AND with the right colors. I made custom rainbow and unicorn stickers for the popcorn boxes, paper cup lids and cupcake toppers. I use my Cricut to cut out adhesive vinyl to make it easy to decorate. The party was in the afternoon, so it was just snacks and cupcakes. Since having children I have gotten much better about not cooking homemade everything and looking to some of my Favorite Store Bought Party Foods for menu ideas. When it comes to kids parties, I keep it pretty simple. Popcorn, chips, fruit, etc. See below for the menu:

The Party Activities:
You gotta have some fun activities for the kids to do. Since we never know what the weather is going to do in March, we needed some indoor activities that usually involve some crafts of some kind. Kid’s love an art project. I decided that an art station where they could color their own canvas and a Craft Station where they could make their own bracelets was the way to go. I drew outlines on the canvases and provided “paint brush” markers (less mess!) for them to use. I also made individual baggies with beads and elastic string to make a bracelet of their own.
