“LITTLE MAN” 1ST BIRTHDAY PARTY

This is Jude.

Isn’t he a cutie? My best friend Shanna and her husband brought this cutie into the world almost 4 years ago. Wow. I cant believe he will be 4 in a few months!. He is our little miracle baby. You can read their story here.

When it came time to plan Jude’s 1st b-day party, I volunteered to make the dessert table. Let’s be honest, 1st birthday parties are more for the parents and friends and family, so I didn’t have any specific flavors or ideas in mind, since he hasn’t really had a chance to develop favorite colors or cake flavors yet.

Shanna decided on a blue and yellow bowtie theme. This is really the first place to start when planning a party. I usually design an invitation and let that guide me in the rest of the decorations. I knew we had to do cupcakes, because every birthday party needs cupcakes! I did take into consideration that there would be several kids there and kept it simple with vanilla cupcakes, rice krispie treats and cookie balls. I always like to have a variety of desserts, hopefully something for everyone and it makes for a better display. I also like to use desserts to bring in the color and theme. Below you will see how I decided on each dessert and how we tied it all together.

Cupcake liners are a super easy way to help make a pretty cupcake. There are so many options out there for colors and designs and it instantly adds some interest to your dessert. I ordered these blue chevron liners to match the invitation design. I also love to do cupcake toppers, so again, to follow the theme, I designed 3 different styles – bow ties, the number 1, and his name. You can buy the printables at my Etsy store, Modpaper Co. here.IMG_1599

After printing, I use a circle cutter to cut them out. I then use a bigger circle cutter to cut out a backing. A little double sided tape and a Popsicle stick and we have a topper!

The next dessert I did was a rice krispie treat. I have been doing these lately for a lot of showers and parties, because: A. they are really easy and cheap to make, not to mention you can also do a million different flavors, B. you can use food coloring to make them any color, and C. you can cut them into any shape. Unfortunately, I did not get a picture of these. We originally were going to cut them into bowties, but the cutter was just simply too big, so circles it was. I tinted them yellow to go with the theme, of course.

The third dessert I decided to do was a cookie ball because I had an idea to do flags and needed something to stick them in.

Here I drew a bowtie shape and mirrored it. I then printed out on scrapbook paper and cut out with scissors. Some more double stick tape and Popsicle sticks and we have another topper. You could also just tie a ribbon with the color or pattern that goes with the rest of the theme, too.

When it came to displaying the desserts, I usually just used cake plates and platters I have at home, but since this was happening outside at a park, we wanted something more disposable. Shanna was having a hard time finding platters and didn’t want to spend too much money on things she’d throw away. A couple days before the party an idea came to me: I suggested she find some cardboard boxes and colored wrapping paper. I have seen this on pinterest and blogs before, but never thought about doing it or really needing to until this party. She got some blue and yellow wrapping paper and gathered old diaper boxes and anything else she could find. This is a great idea for bringing in color, pattern and helping add dimension to your table. I do this for every party now. It’s really cute and really cheap!
