I am starting a new series, folks. I LOVE donuts. Like really love them. And all kinds too: baked, fried, glazed, yeast, cake, the list could go on. It’s really bad that I live across the street from one of my favorite local donut shops, Five Daughters Bakery, home of the 100 layer donut. And who can ever deny a good ol’ Krispy Kreme.
I have made a few baked donuts from time to time but have always wanted to try all the different varieties I so love, which has inspired my new series: Donuts are my Love Language. I hope you enjoy.
This is crossover post, too, as I originally wanted to make these for a Feedin’ Eden post. I am always looking for easy, healthy recipes to feed my girl (and her brother when he starts eating solids, of course). She takes after her mother and also loves a donut. Though she does sneak a bite of our 100 layer donuts or Ellie’s old fashioned’s from time to time, we do try to get her the Paleo donuts from Five Daughters when out on Saturday mornings to avoid too much sugar. This inspired me to make her a breakfast that I know she would love and get excited about but still be healthy. I looked to my favorite baby food source, Baby Foode and found her recipes for donuts with variations, so I knew this is where I would start. The Apple Cinnamon are really good and guilt free all while tricking my baby girl into thinking she gets to eat donuts everyday! See below for the recipe and instructions:
Step 1: Preheat your oven and prepare a donut pan. You can get these from Target or Amazon for pretty cheap.
note: I like to use a piping bag to fill them. You can just as easily do this will a spoon or put into a bowl with a spout and pour. I just find it easy and quick to pipe them really fast.
Step 2: Combine whole wheat flour, all purpose flour, baking powder, nutmeg, cinnamon and salt in a large bowl.
Step 2: In another bowl combine honey, almond milk, egg, yogurt and applesauce.
Step 3: Add the wet ingredients to the dry and mix until just combined with a spatula.
Step 4: Add walnut and gently stir them into batter.
Step 5: Fill the donut pans with batter.
Step 6: Bake for 8-10 minutes until toothpick inserted comes out clean.
Step 7: Let them cool on a wire rack. I did sprinkle a little raw sugar and cinnamon on top, but totally unnecessary if you are wanting no sugar.
Enjoy!
