Tis the season to DIY! Also, it’s spring and one the things we can actually do right now is go outside. We have been going on daily walks and bike rides with the kiddos and it has given me life during this crazy time of quarantine. Spring also means it’s time to get out the dirt and planters and get my urban gardening on! Eden started helping me plant my balcony herbs last year and it’s something so fun we an do together.
This year I decided to make some fun plant markers for us to stick in our pots. I made some clay ornaments a couple years ago for Christmas and thought it would be fun to pull out the leftover clay and create something fun for spring. This would also be a great homemade gift for mom for the upcoming Mother’s Day. You can make them in any color or any kind of plant.

Clay / Letter Stamps / Gold Spray Paint / White Spray Paint / Pizza Cutter / Rolling Pin / Ruler
Supplies:
Modeling Clay – I used Sculpey, but you can also use Das. One is oven baked and one is air-dry. I have used both and both are good.
Letter Stamps
Ruler
Knife or Pizza Cutter
Rolling Pin
Spray Paint or Craft Paint
Instructions:
STEP 1: Roll out modeling clay to about 1/4″ thick.
STEP 2: Take a ruler or straight edge and cut long strips about 3/4″ thick, using a knife or pizza cutter.
STEP 3: Cut the edges off each end to make a 4-5″ long rectangle.
STEP 4: Cut points in the end of each marker. This doesn’t have to be perfect. I just eyeballed it.
STEP 5: Take the letter stamps and write out the names of herbs you will be planting.
STEP 6: Let clay harden according to manufacturers’ directions. Mine was the kind you bake so I baked these at 275 for about 15-20 minutes. Allow time to cool.
STEP 7: I wanted my markers to by white and have a sheen, so I spray painted them with glossy spray paint.
STEP 8: Tape off past the letters and paint the top half with paint color of your choice. I used a gold spray paint because 1) It’s my jam and 2) I had gold spray paint in my garage.
STEP 9: Allow paint to dry and stick inside your planters.
